2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. Yet, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs have natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and grappling abilities enable a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
