How It Happened
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property close to the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed served in the Italian military police.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.
