Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in July.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation following the summer tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".
After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen as the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for Doris should the skipper does not regain fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
