FAI Passes Motion Urging European Football Ban on Israel
Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to submit a official proposal to European football's governing body, calling for the banning of Israeli football from continental team and national tournaments.
Basis of the Proposed Suspension
This motion, that had been proposed by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted alleged breaches by the IFA of a couple of important Uefa statutes.
- Inability to implement and enforce an effective policy against racism.
- Organisation of clubs in disputed territories lacking the consent of the Palestrian FA.
Vote Outcome and Future Actions
According to an official statement from the Irish FA, the proposal was supported by 74 votes, with 7 against and 2 abstentions.
They plans to officially present this motion to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.
During a special assembly of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It passed by a large margin.
Earlier Uefa Considerations
The European body had earlier put on hold intentions to ban Israel at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.
While Uefa never publicly stated considering an extraordinary meeting on the matter, preparations were believed to be quite advanced.
Global Context
The FAI resolution comes after similar calls in September from the leaders of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for Israel's suspension from global football.
Those requests were issued after United Nations experts urged Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has rejected these claims and described the findings as scandalous.
Potential Ramifications
If European football's authority decide to suspend the IFA, it would probably strain relations with the United States government – joint hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which strongly opposes such an action.
Even though the European body has the authority to exclude Israeli teams from European competitions, it might not be able to prevent them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by Fifa.
