Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Attack Succumbs to Injuries
A woman stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The victim, aged 34 years, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, charged over the attack.
Originally charged with attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said police personnel will remain around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act [happened], you know, it's terrible."
