Hoosier State Female Fatally Shot When Showing Up at Incorrect Home Address for Cleaning Duties

Authorities in Indiana are weighing possible criminal charges against a resident who allegedly shot and killed a woman after she mistakenly went to the incorrect location thinking she was scheduled to clean a property.

Officers found Maria Florinda Rios Perez De Velasquez, aged 32, dead early Wednesday morning at the entrance of a residence in Whitestown, a community of about 10,000 people outside Indianapolis.

She belonged to a cleaning crew that had gone to the incorrect house, according to police in an official release.

Officials did not publicly named the person who fired, but investigators turned over their findings from the probe to the Boone County prosecutor, the local district attorney, on Friday.

This case will focus on Indiana’s self-defense statutes, which permit residents to use deadly force to prevent what they genuinely think is an illegal entry into their home.

However the killing has shocked many. Rios Perez’s husband, her husband, stated to local media that he was standing with her at the front door but didn’t realize she had been shot until she fell into his arms, injured. On a fundraising page, her brother mentioned that she was a mother of four.

A majority of US states have comparable statutes like Indiana’s in place, as reported by the national legislative research group.

In comparable incidents in other states, authorities have successfully brought charges against individuals who used a firearm outside their residences, such as a guilty plea by an elderly man who shot a Black teenager after the youth came to his door by mistake. In another state, a person was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing a female in a vehicle who drove down his driveway by mistake.

The incident highlights continuing discussions about self-defense laws and their application in everyday situations.
