Just as bad weather tore through the northern region the night before, Manchester City blew the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil win for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for United

This result represented successive WSL losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capability to manage domestic and European soccer with a small team has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would fully examine this ability. Regrettably for the visitors, they looked fatigued all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in opposition, have fewer workload issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything early on, using the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an chance for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had multiple attacks ahead, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. City, on the other hand, dominated the ball, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

After the Break

The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, rattling the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to register a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to beat any team who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to put them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
