Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Recent Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA game since player Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Miami team were focused as they put up 86 opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
